Exercise is known to increase adult #hippocampal #neurogenesis: the birth of new #neurons (#brain #cells) in the #hippocampus. But what kind of #exercise is most effective? At least in rats, the answer appears to be good old fashioned #cardio. The authors of a new study compared the effects of three types of exercise on neurogenesis: #aerobic exercise (running on a wheel), #resistance training, and #HIIT (high intensity interval training). The results show that aerobic exercise is best by leaps and bounds, HIIT has a small effect, and resistance training has no effect on neurogenesis compared to sedentary control animals. Further, the authors found that more aerobic exercise lead to greater gains in neurogenesis. This doesn’t mean that HIIT and resistance training aren’t beneficial for health, but rather that regular aerobic exercise is the most effective method to ensure continued brain health. #science #neuroscience #exercisephysiology #jphys #nytimes 10.1113/JP271552
